When you think of white wines, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and
Sauvingnon Blanc often come to mind. While these are safe
choices, there are a host of wonderful whites you may want to
try and break out of your current white-wine mindset.
Torrontes for instance, is a beautiful, crisp and citric white
wine from Argentina. The first thing that will knock your socks
off about Torrontes is its amazing aromatic bouquet. Torrontes’s
acidity makes it a great compliment to crab, shrimp, spicy Asian
cuisines, and goat cheese.
Ask any wine specialist or “wine geek” about one of the more
exciting wine regions out there, and Austria should be at the
top of the list. Specifically, Austria’s Gruner Veltliner,
sometimes known as “Gruve”, is considered one of the world’s
most food-friendly white wines. The better examples show
beautiful citrus-peach notes with slight peppery
characteristics. This wine goes great with so many foods its
hard to list them all. Just figure anything from raw oysters to
Sushi to even sausage or bratwurst!
Albarino, predominantly from Northern Spain, is another light,
highly acidic wine with flavors of apricot, peach and citrus
that will also go with all cuisines earlier mentioned. Any of
these wines, however, can stand alone and are an excellent
choice for sipping poolside or just to chill out on a summer’s
day.
One great point about these wines is their reasonable prices.
Here at The Winery, we offer Laxas Albarino for $16.99, Lois
Gruner Veltliner for $15,99 and El Fogon Torrontes for only
$9.99. Stop in and give one or all a try.
